Sadly, Polly, our Oxford Sandy and Black sow, was unable to have any more piglets so we made the hard decision to let her go. She didn't go to waste though, she made delicious sausages and bacon. This may seem harsh to some people, but to us it was the most fitting way to end her life. She was a happy pig who gave us hours of pleasure, did lots of digging in areas we wanted to plant trees in and gave us lots of piglets which made tasty meat. It wasn't a feasible option to keep her as a pet, we couldn't justify the energy and resources required to make her food. And it was unthinkable to let her meat go for sausages full of E numbers and other additives. She has been enjoyed by many people.
Our last lot of piglets are also now chops, ham, bacon and sausages to name a few mouth watering pork products. We ran sausage making courses and a curing and smoking day using the meat from the piglets and were joined by a number of people who are as passionate about food as we are. Details are on the past courses and events page and we are planning to run more courses in the future so if you are interested in attending, please contact us.
We're on the look out for another breeding sow and to have more piglets in spring 2009. In the meantime, the ground is having a rest and we're preparing for the next pig keeping course, see details on the Courses and Events page.
